Dai Woodhams Scrapyard at Barry in South Wales started buying withdrawn locomotives from British Railways in 1959 and by 1968 had purchased 297 of these preservationists saved 213 although many spent years on death row. Here's a row of former GWR Small Prairie Tanks and Manors stand rusting in the sea air in August 1979. The closest is 2-6-2T No. 5538 even has an original style BR unicycling lion emblem on its side tanks. Withdrawn in 1961. The locomotive was the 185th to be saved and is now being restored by the Dean Forest Railway.
