Here's a story about this Steam Locomotive. This Steam Loco is a Jubilee Class 4-6-0 No. 45699 Galatea. 45699 Galatea sets off southbound from Hereford Station in May 1963 with its attractive train of maroon carriages. Also waiting to depart from the station are 2 GWR engines. Hereford had a shared shed for LMS and GWR. Galatea is one of the lucky Jubilees that was preserved and is still with us. It was named after HMS Galatea. Built in April 1936 at Crewe Works and withdrawn from Shrewsbury in November 1964. In 1953. The engine was derailed and ended up on its side. Despite this. Only 2 people were slightly injured and very slight damage was done to the engine. After withdrawal and a short spell at Eastleigh. It was taken to Barry Scrapyard in January 1965. It remained there slowly deteriorating until 1980. When it was rescued by the late Brian Oliver and moved to the Severn Valley Railway. The original plan was for it to be a donor engine for 45690 Leander that was being rebuilt. It ended up at Steamtown at Carnforth where it was given a total rebuild and returned to main line steam in April 2013. Galatea is currently heading steam specials on the main line and is painted in British Rail maroon.
