Built to serve collieries and lead mines in the South Tyne Valley. The steeply graded 13 mile Haltwhistle to Alston Branch Line was opened by the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway in 1852. Featuring the graceful Lambley Viaduct. The railway finally closed in 1976. But since then. The entire route has been reopened as a footpath and cycleway while the southern section has also been reopened as a Narrow Gauge Railway.
