The Trans Pennine Trail. It opened in 1845. It closed between 1970 and 1983. Hadfield to Wortley via Woodhead Tunnel. Hadfield, Crowden, Woodhead, Dunford Bridge, Hazlehead Bridge, Penistone and Wortley. One of the earliest main line railways built in Britain. The Manchester to Sheffield route involved the building of the 3 mile Woodhead Tunnel at that time. The longest tunnel in the world. Primarily a coal carrying line. It was electrified and modernised after the Second World War. But with the slow decline of the coal industry. It's days were numbered finally closing in 1983. Since then. The 2 sections on either side of the tunnel have been incorporated into the Trans Pennine Trail.
