The Princetown Branch. Yelverton to Princetown. Opened between 1826 and 1883. Closed in 1956. Yelverton, Dousland, Burrator & Sheepstor Halt, Ingra Tor Halt, Kings Tor Halt and Princetown. Built along the route of an early horse operated tramway. The standard gauge Dartmoor Railway opened in 1883. Serving granite quarries on Dartmoor. It climbed up from Yelverton and meandered around the tors to remote Princetown. The highest standard gauge station in England and home to the notorious Dartmoor Prison. Traffic was never heavy although it was popular with Dartmoor walkers during the Summer Months. Closure came in 1956 and today much of the route of this remote railway can be walked on a clear day affording fine far reaching views across Dartmoor.
