Here's a story about this Steam Locomotive. This Steam Loco is a Hughes Fowler Crab 2-6-0 No. 42771. Standing forlorn and withdrawn at Leeds Holbeck Shed in 1963 is this Hughes Fowler Crab. It was built at Crewe Works in July 1927 and withdrawn from this shed on 23rd November 1963 being scrapped at Crewe Works on 31st December of that year. Known colloquially as Crabs. This class of engine was designed by George Hughes who was the CME of the LMS between 1923 and 1925. The class was built between 1926 and 1932. The work continued by Hughes Successor Henry Fowler. The name crab was used partly because the unique inclined cylinders represented a crabs claws. But also because of the feeling on the footplate that the engine was scuttling along the track. They were also called Horwich Moguls as the first batch was built at the Horwich Locomotive Works.
